The movie is made by Viacom18 Studios and Aamir Khan Productions. It is a remake of the 1994 American movie Forrest Gump, which was adopted on the 1986 book of the same name by Winston Groom. Along with Kareena Kapoor, Naga Chaitanya (making his Hindi film debut), and Mona Singh, Khan plays the title role in the movie.
Over the course of two decades, the Forrest Gump adaptation underwent a number of revisions. Atul Kulkarni spent the first 10 years reworking the script and another ten years acquiring the remake rights.
